Stephen Ministry at St. Mark's Lutheran Church

Loving Support When The Journey Is Hard
Stephen Ministry at St. Mark's is a program that equips lay people to share Christ's love by providing distinctively Christian, one-on-one care to those who are suffering from the challenges and difficulties of life.

Stephen Ministers listen to, care for, and pray with their care receivers during the process of finding healing and wholeness. Their role is not to give advice or to solve problems, rather it is to allow God to bring about the healing. Stephen Ministers are trained to recognize when a care receiver's needs exceeds his or her capabilities, and to work with their care receivers to find the needed help. They are trained in listening skills, understanding feelings, recognizing boundaries, assertiveness, and distinctively Christian caring, as well as in the types of difficulties their care-receivers may be experiencing. They receive monthly peer supervision and continuing education.

Confidentiality is a hallmark of Stephen Ministry. Information shared with them by care receivers is held in the strictest confidence.

Stephen Leaders oversee and direct the program. They recruit, select, train, and supervise. They identify those in need of care and inform the Referral Coordinator who matches them with a caregiver.

Do You Need Help?
A care receiver is anyone who is suffering from life's challenges and feels they are unable to cope alone. Divorce, separation, grieving the loss of a loved one, job loss, anxiety, spiritual crisis, illness, caring for another, the elderly and the aging process are some examples those situations where help is needed. Caring relationships continue as long as it is beneficial to the care receiver.
